A Man of Action [BSG - Baltar, Gaeta]
Title: A Man of Action
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica
Characters: Felix Gaeta, Gaius Baltar
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1300
Summary:
He finally realizes that Gaius Baltar isn't the man they so desperately need.
Notes: Written for IJ's kinkfest. Prompt: BSG - Baltar/Gaeta - disillusionment - tarnished image

“Mr. President,” he begins almost brightly, somehow still thinking that Gaius Baltar can solve every problem that the fleet will ever face. “I’ve collected some statistics – numbers, facts – that you’re going to want to take a look at.”

He hesitates, uncertain. The president has not even bothered to glance up from the mess of papers scattered across his desk. Mumbling incoherently to himself – a simple eccentricity, Felix has always thought, a sign of his great genius – Gaius fiddles with the papers for a long moment before blinking and jerking his head up.

“What?” he asks weakly, distractedly, and then repeats the question more sharply.

With practiced patience, Felix gestures with the sheet of paper he’s clutching in his hand. “There are statistics here that you should know about…”

Gaius Baltar laughs suddenly, and the sound is coloured by despair and a hint of madness. “Statistics?” he repeats disbelievingly, his eyes shifting manically, looking at everything but Felix. “Do you really think I have time…?” he breaks off, shakes his head, and starts again, “You can’t possibly understand how much pressure I’m under, how much…”

“When you get a chance,” Felix interjects, dropping the paper onto an empty corner of the president’s desk and escaping as quickly as he can. The sound of quiet insanity follows him out of the room, and he’s forced to remind himself that no, he truly doesn’t understand.

* * *

“Mr. President,” he announces, tapping his fingers lightly against the edge of Gaius’s desk. “The Ones said that they… require your presence.” Felix has to swallow down bile at the thought of himself as the Cylons’ errand boy and the president at their beck and call.

“Ah,” Baltar says intelligently, and he taps his pen nervously against one of the papers in front of him. Felix sees that the information he left days earlier is still sitting untouched in the corner, now half buried under a stack of new reports.

He lets himself assume that the president simply hasn’t found the time to look at it.

“Why do you let them do this to you?” Felix demands, as obvious as the answer may be. Surely Baltar could still earn some form of respect from their occupiers if he were only to demand it.

Baltar’s head jerks up and he blinks his eyes at Felix, vaguely fishlike. “And what, exactly, is the alternative?” The words are sharp but his smile is forced and bitter.

Felix has no reply.

Gaius Baltar laughs, a hopeless, desperate sound. “I never meant for any of this to happen. You do realize that, right?” he asks, his eyes again trained on the desk.

Until now, Felix would never have assumed otherwise. “I… yes, of course I do.”

* * *

“Mr. President,” Felix Gaeta says, one week later, as he waves a new handful of papers around, “there are some… troubling new reports that you should take a look at…”

He hesitates, frowns, and his hand falls to his side. “But since you haven’t managed to even look at the older reports yet, I guess I might as well hold on to them for a while.”

“Ah, yes. Yes, please do that,” Baltar replies, his eyes darting strangely between Felix and a patch of empty space. It’s hard to tell whether or not he has even really heard the words.

Felix wonders whether the occupation has driven the man insane, or if he has always been this way.

“You’re an intelligent man, Mr. Gaeta,” the president declares. “Surely… surely you’re capable of using your own judgment to… attend to these matters.” He trails off distractedly, as if such concerns are unworthy of his attention.

Felix watches him for a long moment, and then the breath hisses out of him in a barely audible sigh. He wishes he knew where the brilliant scientist who actually cared about the people of New Caprica disappeared to, if such a person ever existed at all. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to remember.

“As you say, sir,” he says, defeated, as he turns to leave.

* * *

“Mr. Presi—” he manages, though the words hardly come anymore.

Felix Gaeta breaks off as soon as he fully steps into the room. Gaius Baltar is not alone. Gaius Baltar is seldom alone, of course, but Felix has long since grown accustomed to the harem of women who wander into and out of the president’s life.

He will never grow used to the blonde… thing that now hovers over the man’s desk.

“Can’t you see that I’m busy, Felix?” Baltar asks, his tone weary but his eyes never deviating from the Cylon woman at his side.

The Six, however, glances up, and her smile would be enough to melt any other man. “You should come back later,” she suggests, though her words are little more than an order in disguise. “We have important matters to discuss.”

“Yes. Very important,” Baltar parrots vaguely, and Felix wonders when it was that he started to hate the man.

“I’ll do that,” he says, failing to keep the anger out of his voice. The Cylon’s eyes narrow slightly at his tone.

The president never notices.

* * *

He enters without a word. Gaius Baltar is president in name only, and Felix no longer wishes to even give voice to the lie.

Baltar is collapsed over his desk, half asleep, as if the problems of his people mean nothing to him. Felix finds the sight sickening, though he cannot be sure whether it is Baltar he hates, or himself for believing in the man for so long. He can’t recall how he ever thought this madman was qualified to be president; he no longer considers him to be worth anything at all.

He moves over to wake him up, and jumps when Baltar jerks awake. Baltar has never been a man of violence – inaction and incompetence, yes, but nothing more – and so Felix is more than a little surprised when, instead of cowering away as would’ve been expected, the president pushes him against the nearby wall. Baltar looks dazed, disoriented, not quite there, but Felix can’t bring himself to care. “Is your Cylon whore not enough for you anymore?” he asks, his voice cold and dead.

“What…? I…” The president blinks once and then staggers away from Felix, rubbing his hands as if he’d been burned. “I’m… I apologize.” He sinks back into his seat and turns away. “I didn’t mean to…”

That defence is growing tiresome. Felix tries to smile, but his lips suddenly won’t move that way. “Of course not,” he says quietly. “You never do.”

Disgusted, Felix walks back to the door. He doesn’t need to turn around to see Gaius Baltar nodding behind him.

* * *

Use your own judgment, Gaius Baltar had said.

He is not in his office when Felix rifles through his desk as quickly as he can, glancing over every piece of information that might possibly be important. His hand is cramping slightly from taking notes so rapidly, and he knows that he’s going to need to find a better way to do this.

Assuming, of course, that he hasn’t already frakked himself over.

He has just gone through everything recent and is putting the papers back in order when the door swings open. “What are you doing?” Baltar asks, and Felix is relieved to see that the man is alone.

“Nothing, sir. Ah… just putting your affairs in order.” Felix tries not to wince. He realizes that he’s going to have to learn very quickly.

“Really,” Baltar says. He doesn’t seem particularly convinced, but he shrugs and apparently decides that this is just another thing he can’t be bothered to care about. “Is that all?” he asks, wandering around the room almost nervously.

“It is, sir,” Felix replies, for once relieved by the president’s inattentiveness.

Use your own judgment, he had said. Stolen information in hand, Felix finally intends to do so. He sees no alternative.

Aww, love this! Your Gaeta is brilliant. And Baltar is a mess, it's such a minimalist way of portraying him but all the more effective. Not quite there anymore but still trying to defend himself, like the only thing that matters is that he won't be blamed.

I love how Gaeta's change of perception is mirrored in his choice of a greeting and in the words you use there. Beginning almost brightly, announcing, saying, managing, not saying anything and in the last paragraph, the whole device is gone, as is Gaeta's attachement to Baltar. Really, really well done and a joy to read. :)

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

Writing Baltar from an external point of view is... not something I've tried before (though I haven't really written much of anything for BSG at all), so it was an interesting thing to try working with, especially since I myself am far more forgiving of his many flaws than I should be, and then someone like Gaeta would have been, in the end.

First, let me say it's always nice to find a new person who writes these two, paired or not, since relatively few BSG writers write about them. :)

Secondly, this is really well done. Gaeta's growing puzzlement, dissatisfaction, then finally disgust with Baltar is nicely and quietly played out here, really pitch perfect.

I liked too how you set up what could be taken as a setup for that moment between Baltar and Gaeta in "Taking A Break From All Your Worries" where Baltar claims to have been letting Gaeta pass intelligence to the Resistance all along.

I also loved the detail where in his disgust, he refuses to use Baltar's title anymore and then where Baltar starts calling him Felix towards the end, as if to show that Baltar has maybe understood this too, or maybe is somewhere inside him wishing for Gaeta's friendship or at least understanding. I'm a big fan of using names and titles as a way to convey evolving relationships between characters, and BSG, with it's military titles, its call signs, etc., provides excellent opportunities to play around with this.

Oh, and the bit where Baltar's still trying to absolve himself is pathetic, touching, and disturbing, all at once.

Great job. Have you written other fic with these two? I'd love to see more if you have. I'm not a presence on IJ, but I have an account.

Yes. Obviously, this is Baltar, and there's no way to know for certain whether he was telling the truth there or simply trying to save face, but I really like the possibility that, even if he couldn't bring himself to do this sort of thing himself, he was still... human enough to want - or at least be okay with - it being done.

Great job. Have you written other fic with these two? I'd love to see more if you have. I'm not a presence on IJ, but I have an account.

Haha, I'm not a presence at IJ either. I only started getting involved in LJ fandoms 4 or 5 months ago, got tired of waiting for LJ's springkink to get started again, and jumped over to theirs instead.

But no, I haven't written them before; I've actually only recently been willing to write BSG fic at all (I used to only write for fandoms which leave me dissatisfied - where the canon doesn't blow me away as completely as BSG usually does).

I really enjoyed this! I'm a sucker for Gaeta and New Caprica (<-- understatement) and this just so nicely captured the devolution of their relationship and the evolution of Gaeta's character. (As much as I adore Gaeta now, I can pinpoint the precise moment I started actually thinking of him as interesting and it was when that "one year later" was on screen.) I really wish I could give more insightful feedback, because this fandom (and especially the Gaeta corner) seems to have some of the best reviewers EVER, but I seem to be coming up short. At any rate, I thought this was nice tight writing, excellent characterization of both characters, and great stuff overall. We shall watch your career with great interest ;)

Thank you for your comments; no worries about insight - to be honest, I still find this fandom just a touch intimidating!

Gaeta... I need to do a serious re-watching, because I'm not sure when I first started to like his character; it was probably around the same time, though, since before then he was more like a shiny, non-crazy extension of Baltar for me.

You and me both! I just started in this fandom myself, maybe a month or two ago. But I have to say, it's a nice, nice fandom. (I'm coming from Harry Potter, which can be kind of crazy!) Especially the Gaeta girls. But yeah- there's a lot of amazing writing in this one.

And that's exactly what it was for me- pre-New Caprica, Gaeta was this annoying little dork that followed Baltar around. As soon as he started getting frustrated with Gaius he started getting interesting (plus it was really weird seeing him out of uniform, which made him even more compelling), and as soon as he pulled that gun he rocketed from someone I didn't pay attention to to someone who'd gotten REALLY interesting. Still a bit of a geek (I'm very convinced he plays whatever the Colonial equivalent of World of Warcraft is WAY too much), but hey- that's why I love him. Okay, that and he's a pretty scientist boy who's not allowed to have nice things. Those guys are total crack to me.

But welcome from one BSG newbie in the fandom to another ;)

Thanks! It seems like it would be a nice, high quality fandom. I'll need to try to get into it a bit more.

I know that I loved Gaeta by the time that wonderful secret tribunal was about to throw him out the airlock, because the absolute angst of that episode... Of course, then there was Baltar's trial, and since I'm in his corner way too much, it took a long time to understand and finally get over that particular betrayal.

World of Warcraft! I suddenly have a disturbing mental image of Gaeta, Baltar, and maybe the medical doctor (and hey, we can throw in Brother Cavil for the crack) sitting around playing Dungeons & Dragons. With a disgusted head!Six looking on!

Yeah, I'm much more in Gaeta's corner, so as far as I was concerned he didn't need Baltar's forgiveness :) I'm joining Madame President in chanting "Airlock! Airlock! Airlock!" Except not really, because it wouldn't be the same show without him and Baltar is like a cockroach- he WILL survive. But Collaborators... I just watched it again after writing my own New Caprica fic, and I didn't think it could hurt any more but wow. Best episode in the series so far I still think.

Do you know how tempted I am to write this now???? If you did the timeline right, it could so work- even with Cavil. Except for some reason I also want to add in Tigh, even though Tigh would never, ever be talked into that. But Ellen's reaction would be fun. Actually, I'm guessing Billy could play, too :)

Completely understandable; hell, if I didn't have a thing for tragic flaws, I would think I'd liked Baltar so much simply for the accent. But still, it was sad to see the one decent, rebellious move he ever made on New Caprica be defamed. (I'm okay with Gaeta stabbing him; it's the lie that hurt!) I suppose, however, that it's fitting for the character.

(This probably isn't half as funny knowing what's coming, but...)

Billy gaped at Gaeta. "You're kidding, right?"

"No, I'm serious. If you ever want to join us…" Gaeta's voice trailed off invitingly.

Billy thought about it. "It's been so long. I didn't think I'd ever have the chance again. Especially being with Dee. She'd never be into that kind of thing."

"Tell me about it. I suggested it once to her and she nearly laughed herself sick."

Billy cringed. "You won't tell her about it, will you?"

Gaeta shook his head. "Of course not."

"It's just that it's so hard to find a good Master…" Billy sighed.

Gaeta grinned evilly. "Trust me. This one is… you won't regret it."

***

I can't believe you're doing this, Six complained as Gaius stuffed the notebooks into the nearest lab drawer. It's not fitting of you at all. If anyone ever found out…

"Yes, well, they won't, now will they?" Gaius said. "But that's why no one will find out." He moved aside some vials. "It would really hurt my reputation."

You could forget the blondes, Six mused. Maybe there are worse things.

"Can't think of too many." He moved a few stools around.

You are not going to do it on the table.

"Why not? It's not like there are better places in here." He seemed supremely unconcerned by it. "And no one ever comes down here. We won't be disturbed."

Six sniffed. You'd better hope not, or you'll never be taken seriously again.

***

Cottle checked his smokes. If this went like usual, he'd need a full pack, at least. Maybe more, if that nutcase of a doctor decided to mooch a few off him. If it wasn't for the fact that the man was so frakking skilled….

But this sort of thing was like an addiction. You might think you can do without it, but try it for a few years and you find out you can't. Of course, Baltar was nothing like old Martin had been, but there weren't many people into this sort of thing, and you had to take what you could get.

With a furtive look around he slipped out of the sick bay.

***

"I'm just saying it doesn't always have to be about sex," Tigh said as he strode through the halls. "Why is it always about sex?"

"Because that's what people do, Saul. I'm surprised I even have to explain this," Ellen said. "Come on. Won't you consider it? Please?"

"It's sick," Tigh insisted. "That sort of thing just isn't right."

Ellen sniffed. "You're no fun at all."

***

The lights in the lab were low. Gaius had even lit candles for ambience, a move which had thrown Six into hysterical laughter. But honestly, if you were going to do this sort of thing you had to do it right.

"All right," he said, pulling his chair up to the table. Gaeta was sitting next to him, hands folded as he glanced over the notes Gaius had made. Roslin's young aide Billy looked nervous and excited at the same time- completely normal, with new partners. Cottle was smoking, and Ellen and Tigh were still bickering. Gaius pulled out a small box.

"I have the dice," he said. "Are we ready to begin?" The others nodded, and Gaius opened his notes. "You enter a room. It's made of stone, with torches flickering on the walls. And you hear breathing…. Roll a D20."

I probably should write more. I'm pretty sure it didn't come across that Ellen wanted her elf character to have sex with Saul's orc-like character :) (I see Saul as much more interested in "how many things can I kill" and Ellen much more interested in "how does the story go?") And yeah, Cavil should join them :) I can see him making arguments for having a character that's rather evil-ish and saying, "but I like the anti-hero types."

The things my brain comes up with on NaNoWriMo :)

Oh, Cavil... too perfect. I can see him arguing in favour of the lawful evil alignment. And playing something like a blackguard. Either that or playing a real paladin and just lambasting the guy.

I am so in love with the fact that you wrote this! It's totally frakking awesome, and I love how you don't reveal what it is until the end. I knew, of course, because I had read the preceding comments, but I'm going to email the link to my husband (an inveterate gamer), without telling him what it is. He will *love* it.

Please, please tell me if you ever write more of this. I literally was cackling throughout.

Btw, after having looked at that new promo for the 4237498745982th time, I have a new theory that that scene between them in the promo is actually a flashback to the Saggitaron debacle. That's Colonial One. I'm sure of it. And look at the windows.

I like that thought, but the only thing is that Gaeta's in uniform. He wouldn't have been during the Saggitaron thing. I'm kind of hoping they drop that entirely and make the whisper about something else :) Totally agree that it's Colonial One, though!

(huge sigh of satisfaction)

This little fic really made my night. I love the furtiveness, and the surprise of who's in the group (Cottle? really?), and the way you string out exactly what's going on. (I suspected pretty quickly, but I own a gaming store, so my thinking is bent.)

Now, however, I want more. What characters are they all playing? and what edition? It's no more preposterous for them to play D&D as it for them to play All Along The Watchtower, so lets see some gaming action. (KOTBSG maybe?)

Anyway, marvelous job. Big smiles.

Y sí, he visto baltar_gaeta. :3 Ya no he decidido si voy a unirme.

Ah, Baltar. No sé.
